Leaders in Training

The LIT year is your first step in our Leadership Development Program and is open to everyone who was a Senior Camper in the summer of 2023. Camp Med-o-lark’s Leadership Development Program is built to prepare future leaders in academic, community, political, artistic and, of course, camp endeavors. LITs will have the opportunity to learn and practice essential leadership, peer mediation, and mentoring skills while living in a cabin with their peers. Of course, LITs will have a TON of fun—imagine the excitement of senior camper year, times ten! During the summer, LITs can expect:

  • Dedicated cabins specifically for LITs.
  • Free time, with dedicated nights in the L.C. (Leadership Center) and on special excursions for which transportation will be provided.
  • Participation in an intensive 1:1 mentoring program with new and younger Med-o-lark campers (often reported as a highlight of the LIT year).
  • Leadership training skills (planning, motivation, organization, evaluation) and peer mediation (conflict resolution, interpersonal communication).
  • The ability to assist in teaching classes and to take 1 or 2 classes of their choice.
  • A significant community service experience.
  • 25% discount on camp tuition.

Junior Counselors

Med-o-lark’s Junior Counselor Program (JCs) is designed for outstanding LITs to return to camp and expand upon leadership skills they learned as LITs. This program is by invitation, and tuition is waived by the camp. JCs will live in cabins with younger campers and will continue to develop their leadership skills. JCs will attend staff meetings, assist in the teaching of classes, assist with on-campus events, and have the opportunity to take exciting classes of their own during each session. JCs participate in a workshop on ethical leadership, which will be beneficial in their senior year in high school, on college applications, and beyond.

JCs will also be assigned a staff mentor, with whom they will work closely during daily teaching periods to develop their teaching skills. JCs will have an off-period as a portion of their daily schedule and nights off, which will be set aside for relaxing, watching movies, or personal time to catch up with friends. Several of these evenings will involve out-of-camp trips for which the JCs can plan their personal entertainment each session. JCs are financially responsible for anything they choose to do during any off-time. Camp staff will supervise all off-time, and out-of-camp trips will be in camp-approved vehicles and/or chartered buses.
